      01. Course description    
 
The goal of this course is to help you feel confident and well-prepared when taking the new Internet-based TOEFL (iBT). In this course, you will polish the language and computer skills needed for the exam, thereby making you a better test-taker. The course starts with an introduction to the new iBT format. You will then learn the types of questions in the reading, listening, speaking, and writing parts of the test, as well as test-taking strategies for each section.

Finally, you will be provided with opportunities to take a few practice tests for each section. There will be daily homework assignments in all language skill areas, including vocabulary.

This course will be of interest to the student who would like to take not only the TOEFL or similar tests in the future, but the iBT in particular
 
   
      02. Course Objectives    

After completing the course, students will be expected to:

  a) Feel confident and well-prepared at the time they take theü test.
  b) Write a good independent and integrated essay for the TOEFL testü

- c)Answer questions in the speaking section in an organized and well-developed manner.
  d)Understand the Process of Elimination (POE), and strategies forü each section.
  e)Practice on screen each section
   
         
    03. Course Activities to meet objectives    

The course will involve a variety of teaching and learning methods including a lecture and discussion, textbook study and on line support material posted in our virtual campus.

Computer literacy and familiarity with the use of information technology will greatly facilitate the student learning experience.

Learning will be, in addition, participative, interactive and self-directed. The evaluation of student learning will be based on the quantity and quality of student class-room involvement, facilitated by learning resulting from self-directed study, homework assignments and examinations.

   
         
      04. Equipment    


In order to participate fully in this course, students must access to our on-line campus.

Students must also have access to the following:

• Internet access, preferably hi-speed.
• An English-compatible operating system (e.g., Microsoft XP or Apple OS X)
• A media player that can play .mp3 files (e.g., MS Windows Media Player, QuickTime, RealPlayer)
• Adobe Acrobat Reader (7.0 or later)
• Internet Explorer or Firefox with Macromedia Flash Support
• MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, and Word)

    05. Grading/Evaluation    
         
Your grade will be based on the completion of homework assignments, including on-line activities, and individual test scores. You must successfully meet the 70% of the class standard in order to receive a passing grade.

Percentage weights for each area of the class are as follows:

• Homework (including on-line activities 50%
• Skill section practice tests 20%
• Complete practice test 30%

Final Exam
Your final exam will be a complete practice test. You will need four hours of uninterrupted time during the final week of instruction in order to complete the exam.

Examination Rules
All examinations must be taken at the assigned time. There are no exceptions to this rule, unless for medical reasons.

The professor reserves the right to provide bonus points to students where exceptional performance and learning is demonstrated on any assignment or during classroom participation. This syllabus represents a contract between the professor and the student.
